The Arts

We aim to provide high quality arts provision through art and design, music, dance, drama and creative writing.

Art and Design

Art and design has a regular allocation every week in class timetables and is included in other subjects where appropriate.

The school runs extra-curricular clubs for all age groups at different points in the school year.

Wherever possible outside artists and professionals are invited into the school to demonstrate new skills and talk about their work.

Music

At John Mayne Church of England Primary School all children in KS2 have the opportunity to learn to play musical instruments during their class lessons. Instrumental tuition takes place during three terms while other aspects of music are taught during other terms. These lessons are part of the normal curriculum:

Yr 3/4 Ocarina

Yr 4/5 Recorder

Yr6 Flute

All of the children in KS2 also belong to the school choir and have lessons with a specialist teacher, Mrs Mayna Horn.

Individual Tuition

Indvidual instrumental tutition is available from visiting peripatetic music teachers.

Clarinet, flute and piano -  Mrs Mayna Horn

Guitar - Mr Sam Laming

Please contact the office if you would like to arrange tutition for your child.

Children have regular opportunities to perform throughout the year.

We promote collaborative working wherever possible and orgnaise special events to work with other organisations.

Creative Writing

The children have frequent opportunities to develop their writing skills. We encourage creativity and technical excellence by celebrating a 'Writer of the Week' from each class. The Tenterden Rural Alliance book awards also allow children to meet authors and explore their work and inspiration for writing.

Opportunities for creative writing are planned into English and across the curriculum. Children regularly enter writing competitions and we have seen a number of prize winners in recent years.

Dance

Dance is planned as part of the P.E curriculum and as part of regular concerts and productions.

Drama

Drama is an integral part of the children's experience at John Mayne School. Our youngest children are regularly engaged in role play and across the whole school and opportunities are developed in other subjects such as History and Religious Education.

All classes produce a special assembly each year in which everyone plays an active part. There are also numerous services, productions and concerts throughout the year which allow the children to perform.
